Syringe filters are compact filtration devices used in laboratories in conjunction with disposable syringes. They are frequently employed for the small-volume sample pretreatment required in experiments such as HPLC and GC; thanks to their convenience and efficiency, they have become a standard consumable in laboratory settings.
Syringe filters require no membrane replacement or cleaning, allowing for the rapid processing of small-volume samples. Furthermore, most sterile models undergo gamma irradiation and are certified free of DNases, RNases, and pyrogens, thereby meeting the stringent requirements of molecular biology and similar disciplines. Their applications are extensive: they are suitable for the sterile filtration of biological fluids and culture media in the lab; for the pre-filtration and clarification—to remove particulate matter—of small-volume samples for HPLC and GC; and for the removal of particulates from reagents such as buffers and additives. Additionally, certain specialized models are designed to accommodate unique experimental needs, such as the post-packaging filtration of viral vectors.

Key Selection Criteria:

1. Select Membrane Material Based on Sample Properties:

Aqueous Samples: Prioritize PES or Nylon membranes, which offer excellent hydrophilicity and high flow rates.
Organic Solvents: Select PTFE or Polypropylene membranes, which exhibit strong chemical resistance.
Gas Filtration: PTFE membranes offer high thermal stability and low extractables, making them ideal for sterile air filtration.

2. Determine Pore Size:

Sterile Filtration: Select a pore size of 0.22 μm or 0.45 μm.
Pre-filtration: Use larger pore sizes (1–10 μm) to remove coarse particulates.
Fine Filtration: Use a 0.1 μm pore size for ultrapure water preparation or high-precision analytical applications.

High-Viscosity Samples: Select a larger pore size or a pre-filtration combination to minimize filtration resistance.
