How to handle the residual fluid volume remaining in the filter after use is also a factor to consider when selecting the filter size. When working with fluids that are costly or exceptionally valuable, it is recommended to use a filter with a low residual volume. This minimizes the residual volume while ensuring the sample is properly filtered.
Follow these steps when using a syringe-tip filter to achieve optimal filtration results:
- Before drawing up the sample, first draw approximately 1 mL of air into the syringe. This minimizes liquid retention.
- Draw up your sample into the syringe, then draw up another 1 mL of air. Invert the syringe and wipe off any residue from the tip.
- Connect the syringe to the needle-type filter using a Luer lock connector. Gently tighten to ensure a secure seal.
- Filter the solution from the syringe and inject it into the sample vial. Then, remove the filter, draw air into the syringe, reattach the filter, and press the plunger to filter out the remaining sample. This maximizes sample recovery.
Note: Use syringes with a volume of less than 10 mL with caution, as they can generate enough pressure to cause the filter to burst.
